What it solves

Use cases for battery storage and EV charging

Storage and charging pay off where power is costly at peak hours, unreliable, or limited by your connection.

One site: solar, battery, charger and genset. Schematic, not to scale.

Peak & demand

Cut peak-hour and demand charges

On Tamil Nadu's HT tariff, peak-hour energy (6–10 am and 6–10 pm) costs 25% more, and demand is billed on your highest 15 minutes, with a floor of 90% of contract demand.

Demand held under a set limit. Schematic, not to scale.

What the battery does

  • Caps 15-minute demand at a set limit
  • Shifts use out of the peak windows
  • Supports a lower contract demand

What we'd look at first

  1. 12 months of bills and meter data
  2. Contract vs recorded demand
  3. Which loads cause the spikes

When it isn't the answerYour demand already sits below the 90% floor, or a process change removes the spike more cheaply.

Backup

Keep critical loads running

Intensive care, cold rooms, continuous processes and server rooms can't ride out even a few seconds of dip or outage.

A hospital wing on battery backup. Schematic, not to scale.

What the battery does

  • Instant backup, where islanding is designed and approved
  • Works alongside the UPS
  • Bridges until the genset picks up

What we'd look at first

  1. Critical loads and single-line diagram
  2. Outage and genset logs
  3. Space and separation distances

When it isn't the answerAn existing UPS and genset already cover the loads and dips are rare.

Genset hours

Run the genset less

Gensets mostly run lightly loaded, which wastes fuel, and short outages start them for just minutes.

The battery carries the load while the genset stays off. Schematic, not to scale.

What the battery does

  • Covers short outages without a genset start
  • Lets the genset run at efficient load
  • Handles motor starts and transients

What we'd look at first

  1. Run hours, starts and fuel records
  2. Load during outages
  3. Outage durations over a year

When it isn't the answerOutages are rare and the genset is small and well loaded.

Solar shift

Use more of your own solar

Solar peaks at midday but the expensive hours come after sunset, so surplus is exported cheaply, curtailed or held back by an export limit.

Midday solar charges the container for the evening. Schematic, not to scale.

What the battery does

  • Stores midday surplus for the evening peak
  • Keeps export within limits without curtailing
  • Raises the share of solar used on site

What we'd look at first

  1. Generation and export data
  2. Inverter make and warranty
  3. Net, gross or open-access arrangement

When it isn't the answerYou already use almost all your solar on site, or exports earn close to the peak-hour rate.

EV charging

Charge vehicles on the connection you have

Fast chargers draw heavy, short peaks, and the connection, transformer and demand charges limit how many you can add.

Three chargers sharing one connection. Schematic, not to scale.

What the battery does

  • Lets fast chargers run on a smaller connection
  • Works with load management across chargers
  • Stores daytime or solar energy for evening charging

What we'd look at first

  1. Vehicle types and dwell times
  2. Connection size and tariff
  3. Parking layout and cable routes

When it isn't the answerChargers run at steady power all day, or a connection upgrade is cheap and quick.

Thin grid

Power where the grid is thin

At the end of long feeders, on the coast and on islands, supply is weak or absent and diesel is costly to bring in.

Solar, storage and a genset for a coastal settlement. Schematic, not to scale.

What the battery does

  • Forms a microgrid with a grid-forming PCS
  • Cuts genset hours with solar
  • Keeps essential loads on through outages

What we'd look at first

  1. Load and resource assessment
  2. Existing genset condition
  3. Access and service logistics

When it isn't the answerA reliable grid extension is planned and close.

Grid scale

Support grid-scale storage projects

Tamil Nadu is procuring battery storage at TANTRANSCO substations; developers need local engineering, commissioning and O&M under the CEA rules that apply from 1 April 2027.

A generic substation yard, not a specific site. Schematic, not to scale.

What the battery does

  • Peak supply, firming and grid support

What we'd look at first

  1. Tender specification and contract terms
  2. Site and interconnection documents
  3. O&M scope and availability terms
